Research and planning - 8th february
Magazine - 22 nd March
Evaluation - 26 th March

Props --> guitars - drums - Microphones
who - Band/My brothers band
where - Robananas recording studio / At their gigs / staged at home.
Costume - normal everyday clothes / Jeans - T-Shirt

My plan is to first take a selection of staged images. I will then edit these images. I will thern take more images which I feel will suit my magazine better. When staging the images i will get the models to acty casually and normally to give a certain message in the images. I will also get them to wear their everyday clothing so as that it does not look to fake.

design elements

Design elements

Colours

I will use colours such as red, yellows and blacks. I am thinking about using these colours because
were most used in real rock music magazine covers. I will use these colours because they are very bright so will standout over the rest of the page. The colours however are still able to present a certain mood which is shown in the rock music genre.  I will make the colours more dull s when looking at the colours they appeared to bright which could make the magazine appear more childish. By making the colours slightly duller they are still able to stand out but can also look professional at the same time. Each of the colours also go well together so it will allblend together. I will use these same colours throughout the magazine so that the whole magazine will blend togetherans it will be easily clear what magazine each page is from.

Font

I want the font on the cover to be relatively simple. This is so that it wont make the cover seem to complex or crowded. However it wnt it to be in a large and bold text so as that it is going to standout and immediately pull in peoples attention.

The heading looks like smashed glass therefore represents anger to show the rock backgrounds. The font used is still relatively simple so is easy to see and to read.

Images Planning

Images

In the double page spread I will use images which like this are able to show bands performing and who are in their own natural environment. This is because these sorts of tables are able to portray the bands well and can also make the audience feel involved as they may have been to these gigs or events which the bands does.

I want to use images on my front cover that use a medium shot because they are able to show body language and can give the portrayal of bands and rock music being very relaxed. Medium shots are also able to cover the most of a page so by using this shot on my magazine cover I will not have to do much to change the background. The eye line is directly at the audience I will do this in my work work as I think that it works well in engaging the audience into the story of the band and makes them feel part of the magazine rather than just spectators.

For the double page spread I might use images like this and like the beady eye double page spread i analysised. This kind of image uses rule of thirds so is able to frame the person into a certain position that will make the image look best. By framing the person on the right and having plain colour on the left it is able to show the person in the images perspective and the idea that they are thinking. The image also doesn't appear to cluttered so is very good to use. In some of the images I will make the eyeline not match the audiences this is because I think that it is able to make the readers think about what the muscician is thinking and kinda helps them to get into their minds and think the way that they would think.

I will use images like this in my double page spread. I like to use an image like this because I think that using a close up of a muscician will help to reflect their personality fully. By being able to focus on the facial expressions an image like this is able to make the audience stop and look at the image rather than just ignoring it, the image makes a big impact. When recreating this sort of image in my own photography for my own magazine I will focus on making sure the facial expressions are able to show personality aswell as their identity as a rock musician.

article ideas

Double Page Spread Article Plan

When writing my article I will make the language seem very casual by using informal language and slang.
I will base the article around a particular band because when researching and analysing other music magazines I found out that they would base a double page spread on a popular band which would pull in fans attention. This is because it is able to reach out to the target audience of people who enjoy the rock genre and have a casual style.

I will use a mixture of red, yellow and black in my article this is because these were the colours which were most used in real rock music magazine covers. I will use these colours because they are very bright so will standout over the rest of the page. The colours however are still able to present a certain mood which is shown in the rock music genre.

I will use very simple font styles as it will be able to be easily read by all the readers. I also want to keep the magazine relatively simple rather than it being to detailed and messy.
 ----->What will my article include:
 - focus on one band
 - details on upcoming albums or gigs
 - quotes and thoughts from the band I am focusing on
 -  stories which can relate directly to the audience.
 -  it could also include rhetorical questions which will interact the reader with the magazine making them keep an interest in the article

content page ideas

Contents Page Ideas!!!!

when looking at music magazines contents pages I have noticed that they normally contain titles with a little sentence that was from the actual article. They were also sometimes split into categories such as News, Features, Albums and Gigs Guide. I plan to use this same format when creating my own contents page.

My ideas for contents page titles :

Features -
 - Effluence - Teenage trio from Lancashire who sound like a violent Muse or incendiary Nirvana, also armed with great songs.

- Tom morello -  Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello is set to join Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their Australian tour

 - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - John Mayer and Christina Aguilera are some of the stars set to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction

- Asking Alexandria - 'It's a lot more mature than anything we've ever done before'.

Albums -
 - Biffy Clyro - Laid Bare - 'My music comes from the bit of my brain that isn't quite working...'

 - Black Veil Brides - Wretched the devine, The story of the wild ones.

 - Muse - The 2nd Law - Intergalactic rockers return with a typically outlandish sixth album.

Gigs -
- Foo Fighters - You Control The Music!! First Station To Let The Listeners Control What They Hear!!

 - Newton Faulkner's Uk Tour - Newton is thrilled to be recording select dates of his UK Tour

- Steriophonics - The band take their outstanding new album 'Graffiti on the Train' on the road in March for a tour of intimate UK venues

Planning

Planning

From the research I have gathered I have decided that i will create a rock genre music magazine. Whilst doing the research i have found that they were usually aimed towards the older teens to young adults. This could be seen through their use of informal language. It is this age range of 15 - 34 that appears to be most interested in the bands which are most interested in  the rock genre. The members of rock bands also tend to be slightly older resulting in an older target audience being brought in.  I will also aim my magazine to this same age range as it is this age range of people from 15-34 who are most interested in this genre of music. The rock magazines I have looked at are aimed at both males and females. This is shown trough their use of colours and the bands they have shown. I am going to aim my magazine to both males and females so as that it will have a wider target audience. By having the target audience as both male it female it puts no restrictions on to creating the magazine. I am going to create a rock music magazine for my magazine to appeal to people with a rock 'n' roll image who are more edge. In all the magazines I looked at all the bands and people in the magazine and in the bands were casually dressed or sometimes smart casual. This helps to show the idea that the audience viewing these types of magazine are very much normal every day people with chilled out attitudes and simple opinions. There interests were mostly on popular rock bands and their ways of life. I could also use darker colours to portray the idea that the rock genre involves a lot of anger and lacks emotion. They also were mostly interested in the general idea of rock music and all that involved. The audience of people looking at these types of magazine were also had interests in gigs and new music releases. I can involve this into my magazine by including these ideas into my article. When planning my music magazine I must insure that it will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers. I will make it so that it will appeal to the older teenagers who tend to be more open to a wide variety of music bands. However i will also make sure that it will still cater for people who want to know about the best bands in rock bands and music whilst still giving information on new bands and songs. The magazine will appeal to a specific audience because it will discuss stories that are relevant to people who listen to and are interested by rock music and its background.Kerrang! Identifies its audience as ‘individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty’. It is people who are like this that my magazine will also most appeal to so I will make sure that when writing the double page spread article that it will be relevant to peoples passion of rock music and will remain on the topic of rock music. Rather then trying to appeal to other audiences by writing about a wider genre of rock music.I will show that my magazine is aimed towards a younger audience by the use of fonts, images and presentation that i will use. I will make it more simplistic rather than it being to overly complicated. Most of the target audience for rock music magazines will be very contemporary and up to date with their looks. The writers of the kerrang magazine have said 'It is the edgy, underground and individualistic style appeals to rock readers and draws them in, this is a crucial element of any successful magazine'. I will try and use this advice when creating my magazine by using edgy and unique font styles and images.

Magazine title ideas and Why?

mgn - music and gossip now - This woud link to my magazine as it will be a magazine based around music and the top gossip on up coming bands. I have chosen to give it an abbreviated name as many of the magazines i researches used abbreviated names. This is able to make the magazine recognisable and easy to remember.
Amp Overload - This is a possible name because it is relevant to the genre of music and is very short and snappy. It is very simple and tells us that rock music is load and bold. This makes it more easy for people to remember.

12 string -This would relate to the genre of  music magazine I am going to create. Within most rock albums there will always be a guitar used in the backing music so I thought I could bring this into the name of the magazine and relate this together. Amp is also able to relate to how loud rock music is and the strength there is in the music.

Sounds of rock / real rock - Most rock music fans seem to be very passionate about music so by putting the word rock into the title of the magazine it is able to pull in their interest. It is also putting the genre of the music into the title so as that it is obvious that the genre of my magazine is rock.

Contents Page Planning

when looking at music magazines contents pages I have noticed that they normally contain titles with a little sentence that was from the actual article. They were also sometimes split into categories such as News, Features, Albums and Gigs Guide. I plan to use this same format when creating my own contents page.

My ideas for contents titles and info:

Double page spread - rolling stone magazine!!!

Double Page Spread - Rolling Stones Magazine!

The image is extended over the whole of the double page spread. This could be because it is also able to tell as a narrative and a story. It is also able to accompany the text which has been written over the top of the image. The wording of the name of the title and the bands new album has been put into bolder and bigger writing then the actual article. This is so that the target audiences attention will be automatically caught. This will therefore make them want to carry on reading. The main article is all kept to one bottom corner suggesting it is less important then the the rest of the pages content
The bands body language is very casual so creates a relaxed atmosphere and feeling. The image is able to make us as spectators think about the band and their lifestyles and journey to get into music.
The whole content of the image has been shot in the top thirds. This means that the whole image is able to flow throughout the page even with the writing overlaying it. The use of empty coloured space on the image is useful as it is able to create a flowing double page spread rather then there being missing and empty gaps in the background.
The text used is very casual as if people were talking to each other. This is a positive thing to have in a magazine double page spread as it means that is easier for people to read and it helps people feel as if they are part of the magazine and the article rather then just spectators. The content is also very to the point rather then it just beating around the bush. This is able to condense the amount of writing that is on the page and means they are able to keep the readers interest rather then  just boring them.

Q contents page analysis

Q contents page analysis

This page is set up with all the text and the images separated onto different sides of the page. This gives the page some structure and makes it easier for the readers to read the information. However the image is made to standout over the text as they takes up about two thirds of the page. Overall the page looks very well structured and easy to follow along with. All Subheadings for articles from within the article are written in a bolder text with all the extra information written in a smaller font. This is written in  a smaller font as it is considered less important that the rest of the text.  The colour red has been used to highlight the background on certain pieces of text. The colour red is able to make these pieces of writing standout.

The images on the contents page shows a image which is related to article within the magazine and is the same image as used in a certain article. This is able to link all the pages of the magazine together. In the image the people all have their hands in their pockets this shows how they are laid back and relaxed. A casual feeling is also put across by the fact that each f the band  members are wearing casual clothing. By putting all of the band members into casual clothing it is able to show how they each have a unique and different identity and personality.

Only text which will most get the readers attention and which which will make them  want to read on has been put onto the magazine. This makes the reader want to continue on and read the magazine as they are left wondering what each piece of text means.

classical rock cover analysis

Classical Rock magazine cover analysis

A very simple font has been used which makes the text more visible and easier to read. The image shows a rock musician from a very popular rock band called Guns n' Roses. The image is able to accompany the text used on the cover as the text is talking about the person in the photo and his band. A medium shot has been used to take this image so as that we are able to see the body language of the person on the cover in order to give a certain message. In this photograph the man looks extremely relaxed and laid back which gives the message that rock music is relaxed and is something which should be enjoyed as a lifestyle rather then seen in a negative light. in the image the mans eye-line is directly at ours which makes us feel more involved with the magazine rather then us just being spectators, it is able to draw us in to read more. The colours white and black contrast together in order to make the wording standout more. The person in the image is dressed very casually in a very unique fashion style, this is able to show how rock music has its own individual identity that is unlike anything else. The fact that the main image is overlapped with the title of the magazine suggests that the magazine is already well known and publicized.

The title is placed in large text at the top of the page as this is where a reader will first look. By the title standing out it means it is the first thing that will be seen. This is good as it is by the title that the magazine can be recognised. The image is framed in the middle of the page which leaves no empty space. The image again also takes up the main space. This is because for the cover of a magazine the text should be very simple so as that the image is able to pull in the attention and the text can give some minimum insight into the content of the magazine. By the small pieces of text being moved towards the side of the page it means that are eyes are drawn mostly to the image in the middle of the page.

The text and language used is slightly formal in a way that no slang has been used. This suggests that the main target audience for the magazine is adults and those interested in the rock music genre and the rock and roll culture. Certain pieces of text has been highlighted and emphasised through the use of bolder text and a bigger font size. These pieces of text have been emphasised so as that people are more likely to look at them and read them rather then just ignoring all of the text. Th pieces of information that people are most likely to be interested in are those that have been emphasised.

double page spread kerrang

On this double page there is an equal amount of text as there is images. This is because both are being given equal importance to each other. It is also because the image is there just to accompany the text so both together are able to tell a story and a narrative. The title takes up around a third of a page this is emphasised by the use of red colour in the word 'brother' within the title. The colour red has connotations of both love and danger. This use of colour goes with the contents text as the main article is speaking about their love for Mitch Lucker and their sadness and anger at his death.  The red and white used in the title also contrasts with        the black background to make it standout even more.

There is one larger image accompanied by many smaller images.  These smaller images have been used as each of the images is able to convey a different meaning and story then the other. All the smaller images together tell one huge narrative. Some of the images contrast with one another as some images show people smiling and happy whilst some of the images show sadness and anger. These are able to accompany the contents to form a narrative of the band member, Mitch's, life. the smaller images all overlap each other, this means that very little of the background is visible.

The language used is very formal suggesting the target audience might be to those older and more intellectual readers and fans rather then young kids. The audience are not being spoken to directly creating a very relaxed tone which makes the reader think about what they are reading. This creates a positive representation of rock music and makes it seem as if more intellectual rather then the bad representations which portray rock music as just being negative and silly.

Kerrang! Contents

Kerrang! Contents

The image takes up most of the amount of space on this page. This is given importance as it is what is able to get the audiences attention the best. The image is also able to add some excitement on to the page rather then there being just text.  The image is used to get our attention rather then the readers just skipping the page as they would in most magazines.

The image is located towards the left hand side this is so that some of the focus is still given to the writing as the text is important on the page. The fact that the image is located here also means the contents page has more of a structure rather then it just being to over detailed or cluttered. The image used of the and has been taken in a medium shot so shows the band from the hips up. This shot is good as it is able to show their body language  as being quite relaxed and normal. This portrays the magazine well as it creates more of a happy feeling then a angry feeling which is usually associated with the genre of rock music. The band are dressed very casually which means people looking at the magazine may be able to relate to the people more as they realise they are normal everyday people. The colours used are quite dark which conveys a very mysterious feeling to the magazine.

The text used in this contents page are mostly to titles of articles from within the contents of the magazine. The main information is being highlighted by the use of bold writing. Smaller writing is then used to give us some less important information about the contents of certain articles.

AP magazine cover analysis

The image shows members of a rock band. This relates to the written contents as the written content is talking about music and new tracks to do with the band shown on the cover. The image depicts a group of band members. Rules of thirds have been used to frame the image with a band member in each of the middle thirds. This is because this is where your eyeliner view is focused so you will be drawn to look at the image before any of the text. Only the peoples faces and shoulders have been used as a close up has been used they are all that needs to be shown. It also uses a close up so as that the background area is taken up and does make the cover appear empty as the space is taken up by the main image. They are all wearing casual clothing which shows they all have different identities from each other therefore shows their individuality and the diverse culture of rock music. The magazine is aimed towards fans of rock music this shown by the use of a very popular rock band.  The image makes us part of it by the use of the subjects eye line  matching ours which makes us feel part of the magazine rather then just spectators as we are drawn into the cover. This also pulls in our attention to the page. The image takes up the most space on the page this is used to give it importance. The colours black, red and yellow are used. These colours are very popular on the front of many rock music magazines. The red is used as it a very bright colour so will standout over any other colours as does the yellow colours. This will also help pull in peoples attention.

The image is given dominance on the page and takes up the most space in comparison to the writing  This is because it is the image which will catch an audiences attention first. The image on the cover hides part of the magazine title. This suggests that the magazine is already very well known and recognizable  The page is arranged so that the bigger band member is at the front of the page this makes him stand out even more as the leader of the band and as the most recognizable by fans.

No slang or informal words have been used which makes the magazine appear mature rather then childish. This makes it seem as if the target audience are older adults. The text used links back to the image as the text that is shown on the front cover is based on the band shown on the cover. Within the cover the most important information and text is emphasized by being bolder and in a larger text. The text also appears to get smaller as you go down the page suggesting the most important pieces of text are more towards the top of the page. The copy is located towards the bottom of the page to advertise bands new track.

NME double page spread analysis

NME Double Page Spread

There is an equal amount of text as there is image. This means that they are both given equal importance to one another. This makes the reader focus on both of the features of the page. The image has focus as it is able to immediately pull in the audiences attention to the article. The image is emphasised as it takes up a whole page over the double page spread.

The image on the page is just one large image rather than many smaller images as it is able to get the readers attention more fully, it also helps to make us focus on to this article over the other articles within a magazine. The contents of the article is based around a band called Beady Eye whilst the image shows an image of Liam Gallagher who is the main member of the band beady eye. This shows the image relates to the contents of the article. The article also gives a lot of Liam's view points and thoughts on certain topics so by the image only showing his head in frame then it can help people to see him thinking and to wonder what his thoughts are. A close up has been used to focus on the mans face. By using this shot it covers a lot of the background meaning there is very little of the background that can be seen. The focus of the image is also mostly upon his facial expressions which are very limited which gives a perception that rock music is emotionless. The person in the image is wearing casual clothing which shows his identity and shows how this genre of music is very calm and hassle free. The clothing he is wearing is very current to what a lot of people are wearing newer days so many people will be able to relate to him. The colours used are very bright and consists of pinks, blues and yellows. The use of  yellows links the double page spread with the cover of the magazine which also uses a lot of yellow colouring. The use of a mixture of colours helps make the magazine article standout and easily visible.

The language used is very modern as the language used is very milar to the ways in which we speak 'one things for certain...' this makes it easier for the target audience to understand and follow the whole of the article as it keeps them interestedin the story. The writing used is very casual an uses a lot of swearing which is used through speech which has been written in the article. this helps to recreate the casual mood which has been set throughout the magazine. Thelanguage is ery much informal.

The genre of the magazine has been showed through the informal language which has been usedthroughout the double page spread which acompanies the image of a rock band member to create a positive representation of rock music industry.

NME contents page analysis

NME Contents page Analysis

IMAGE --> page is taken up by image. These images each tell something about a piece of text or content from a page in the magazine. There is a main image which is located in the middle of the contents page with smaller i
Images located around the side. The images are arranged like this in order to give the page an order and structure. Most of the images only show close up shots showing the face and shoulders. These are shown in the images as it is able to show emotions in the faces. The clothing shown in the images is very casual which helps give the magazine a casual and layed back feeling to it. This has a good effect onto the audience as they are able to relate to the musicians shown in the magazine. It also helps to make it easy for people to look at and read. The actions shown in some of the images show people making music by singing and playing instruments in a studio. This is able to give a good representation of the magazine and its genre as being based around music. The colours used are quite dull using mostly black in the text - this may have been done as the text is less important over the other parts of the magazine so needs less focus on it. The contents page however contains splashes of red colour on it  which is done to highlight certain page numbers.

LAYOUT ---> The images take up most of the space on the contents page. The images are given the most importance over the other features of the page as they are able to tell us more about the magazine articles then the actual article titles can. The people reading the magazine are also able to relate more towards to the people in the images but they are unable to relate to the words and text which are on the page. The fact the larger image is located in the middle of the page with the smaller images surrounding it means our focus is on that part of the page and gives it more emphasis.

LANGUAGE ---> the contents uses a lot of speech and quotations from popular musicians which means we are given a little bit of insight into what the contents of the magazine will be. The contents page has used a rhetorical question 'IS THE JOHNNY MARR ALNUM ABOUT COMPUTER SEX?' This makes the reader think and includes them into the magazine.

GENRE ---> The genre of the magazine is shown through the images used which show and represent musicians and bands which are widely well known. The context of the text also relates back to rock music as the text gives information based around gigs and bands.

NME cover analysis

The images are of a man from a very well-known and popular band. This is relevant to the written content as it is all based around rock music. A close up has been used to focus on the mans face. By using this shot it covers a lot of the background meaning there is very little of the background can be seen. The focus is also mostly upon his facial expressions which are very limited which gives a perception that rock music is emotionless. The person in the image is wearing casual clothing which shows his identity. The rule of thirds has been used to frame his face in the top of the page. This has been used because the top of the magazine is at your eyeliner view meaning it is able to pull in your attention straight away. By doing this the magazine is able to catch your eye and your attention. Only the top of these people are needed to be shown. The image makes us part of it by the use of the mans eye line matching ours which makes us feel part of the magazine rather than just spectators. The image takes up the most space on the page this is used to give it importance over the text. The use of the grey and dull colours makes the mood of the image and magazine appear more miserable. The colours used are mostly yellows which makes it stand out over other other magazines it may have competition with. The yellows also creates a positive and up beat mood.

The image takes up a large amount of space on the magazine cover. The image is given importance because it is able to pull in the viewers attention more then other features such as the text. There are smaller images which contrast with the larger image as they depict a rock band smiling and being happy. This gives two different reflections of rock music. The text on the cover of the magazine is all kept to one side. This pulls our eyes even more towards the image and puts structure into the magazine. Parts of the text have been made bolder to highlight there importance. The text used related to the genre of rock music as it on the cover the text tells us something famous rock bands and singers.

The language of the text used is a very relaxed tone through the use of words such as 'Gob' and 'knobheads'. This is very much informal helping to enforce the relaxed tone. This also suggests the audience are frequent readers and are being spoken to. The audience have been spoken to directly when it says 'The upcoming releases you must own this year!' By directing the reader this is able to make them feel involved in the magazine making them want to continue reading on. The text is able to link to the text on the cover as parts of the text are speaking about the man shown in the image. The title has been written is a very simple and plain text style which suggests that the magazine is very well known. The title has also used a bright red colour making it stand out even more then the other text used on the cover.

The genre of the magazine is shown through the images used. The magazine is based is based around rock music. The image shows a male musician which is usually considered the normal in rock music as musicians tend to be male. The genre of rock music is usually considered by many people to be aggressive this is seen through the facial expressions of the male in the image.

Kerrang Magazine research

•   The image shows a band of 5 men. This relates to the written contents as it is all based around rock music. The image depicts a group of band members. Rules of thirds have been used to frame the image within the top thirds. This is because the top of the magazine is at your eyeliner view. Only the top of these people are needed to be shown it also uses a close up so as that the background is not to empty. They are all wearing smart casual clothing all different from each other therefore shows their individuality. Portrays their identities as well as. This magazine is aimed at rock fans who think the charters on the cover are cool. The colours dark black, red, etc. are used to make the writing standout. The heading looks like smashed glass therefore represents anger to show their rock backgrounds.
